NHIS Health Checkup in Korea: A Booking Guide for Foreign Residents
If you live in Korea and have National Health Insurance, check your current-year screening entitlement before buying a private checkup package. NHIS says foreign insured people have the same coverage as Korean citizens, but that does not make every resident eligible for every test every year. A tourist with travel insurance should not assume this programme applies.
I would settle three questions before choosing a hospital: am I on this year's list, which examinations are included, and can this clinic provide them in a language I can use? A nearby clinic or an attractive package price does not answer those questions.
Public guidance checked 21 October 2026.
Start with the right kind of examination
| What you need | What to establish first |
|---|---|
| NHIS general screening, 일반건강검진 | Your current-year target status and included items. |
| National cancer screening, 암검진 | The specific cancer programme, eligibility and any co-payment; general-screening eligibility is not an all-test pass. |
| A private comprehensive package, 종합검진 | The itemised price and which parts, if any, are being billed under your national entitlement. |
| A certificate requested by an employer or immigration office | The exact required form, tests and accepted issuer. Do not assume an ordinary screening result meets that requirement. |
Keep the requested document name when making enquiries. “I need a health check” is too broad if the real task is obtaining a particular certificate.
Check this year's target status—not just your age
The current NHIS general-screening guide lists workplace-insured people, regional-insurance householders, and household members or dependants aged 20 or over. The usual cycle is every two years; non-office workers are screened annually. Use your actual record rather than assuming a colleague's schedule applies to you.
On the Korean NHIS site, the route is 건강모아 → 나의 건강 → 검진대상 조회. The personal enquiry requires authentication. If you cannot complete it, contact NHIS or ask a screening institution how it can confirm your target status. No paper notice does not automatically mean no entitlement.
Find a designated clinic for the examinations you need
Open the official screening-institution finder. Choose your area and at least one screening type: 일반 means general screening, 구강 dental screening and 암검진 cancer screening. These are search categories, not confirmation of your personal entitlement.

The finder warns that listed details may differ from current conditions. It also says people due for the lung-function test added in 2026 should check equipment availability before visiting. Do not treat a search result as a reservation or assume English support is included.
Separate the covered checkup from paid extras
For eligible examinees, NHIS's English guidance lists the general health checkup as free of charge. Cancer screening has its own coverage and co-payment rules. Optional tests, sedation or a private package should not be assumed free merely because the visit includes a national checkup.
Ask the clinic to identify covered items and quote any extras before agreeing. I would rather leave a booking call with a short, clear list than discover at reception that “the checkup” meant a different package.
A short booking message you can use
“I am a foreign resident with NHIS. Can you confirm my current-year NHIS screening eligibility, or should I check with NHIS first? Which screening items do you provide, and is English assistance available? What identification should I bring, and are there any optional charges?”
국민건강보험에 가입한 외국인입니다. 올해 국가건강검진 대상인지 확인하고 예약하려고 합니다. 가능한 검사, 영어 안내 여부, 준비할 신분증과 추가 비용을 알려 주세요.
Tell the clinic which document and insurance status you actually have. Confirm fasting, medicines and other preparation directly with the clinic or your clinician; do not change prescribed treatment to follow a generic internet checklist. Arrange how and when results will reach you, and ask the clinic about any follow-up it recommends.
If the website or language is the obstacle
The NHIS contact page lists 033-811-2000 or 1577-1000, extension 6 for consultation in English, Chinese, Uzbek and Vietnamese. It lists opening hours of 9am–6pm and the overseas number +82-33-811-2001. This is NHIS support, not an appointment line for every clinic.
Use verified private channels for identification records. Do not put a residence-card number, questionnaire or examination results in a public comment. Website trouble alone does not establish that you are uninsured or must buy a private package.
Related tasks—not substitutes for a screening appointment
- Registering family members as NHIS dependants: establish insurance status and documents first.
- Finding after-hours medical care in Korea: for a care-access problem, not preventive screening. Do not delay urgent care to complete screening paperwork.
