Lost a Foreign-Issued Card in Korea? What to Do First
Official guidance checked October 21, 2026 · Korea Standard Time
If your credit or debit card is missing in Korea, contact the institution that issued it immediately through its official app, website or loss-report number. Follow its instructions to block the card and confirm the report. Secure the card first; search for the wallet afterward.
This guide is for visitors and residents using cards issued outside Korea. Your issuer handles the card account and transactions; local lost-property services may help you find the wallet. The useful distinction in the official guidance is who can protect the money and who might be holding the missing item.

1. Reach the issuer, not a random number in a search ad
Use the banking app already on your phone, a website you open directly, or the contact details on a statement. Tell the issuer that the card was lost or stolen while you are in South Korea. If several cards are missing, contact each issuer; do not assume one company's report covers unrelated foreign cards.
Keep the report time and confirmation. If the app offers a temporary freeze, check whether you have also completed the lost-or-stolen report and any required replacement step. A control showing “frozen” is not necessarily the end of the process.
A temporary freeze is not the same as replacing the card
For example, Wise distinguishes freezing from replacing: a freeze can be reversed, while replacement permanently blocks the old card. Its freeze guide also says pending and offline transactions may still be processed. These are Wise's rules, not a description of every banking app. Follow the procedure for the card you actually hold.
If the card is recovered after being out of your control, ask the issuer whether it should be replaced before using it again. Getting the wallet back would be welcome; it would not tell me what happened to the card while it was out of sight.
2. Check Visa or Mastercard support if you need additional help
| Network | Official route to check from Korea | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | Report a lost or stolen card → See all phone numbers → South Korea, the country you are calling from. | The page works with your financial institution. A replacement or emergency cash is not automatic. |
| Mastercard | Official global support lists +1-636-722-7111 for calls from outside the United States. | Also contact the issuer. Do not assume an international call from a mobile or hotel phone is free. |
On October 21, Visa's selector displayed 00798-11-00-908-12 for South Korea. Its default screen showed a U.S. number, so selecting your current calling location matters—not the country where your card was issued. The same dialog warns that mobile or hotel calls can incur charges. Recheck the live directory before dialling; I checked the display, not a completed call.
Visa lists physical, digital and cash assistance, with issuer approval and location-dependent timing. The Mastercard U.S. FAQ says an emergency replacement requires the issuing institution to authorize a new account number. Confirm the arrangements for your particular card. Ask about eligibility, cost, identification, collection or delivery location, and the date you leave Korea. Do not plan tonight's hotel payment around an unconfirmed delivery estimate.
3. Tell the issuer about unfamiliar transactions
If you already see an unfamiliar charge, tell the issuer during your initial loss report. Then review the remaining transactions and follow its instructions for reporting or disputing suspicious charges. Record the amount, currency, merchant name and transaction time shown; mention that you are in Korea if the time zone is unclear. Keep the case reference and any separate claim instructions.
Blocking a card, disputing a charge and receiving reimbursement are different outcomes. Coverage depends on the card, issuer, applicable terms and circumstances. A general “zero liability” heading is not a personal refund decision.
4. Work out the next payment without assuming a replacement will work everywhere
After reporting, list what you actually need to pay next: accommodation, travel and essential daily costs. Ask those businesses which alternative payment methods they accept. A digital replacement may be useful only if your issuer offers it and the merchant accepts the relevant payment method; it is not a guarantee that every Korean terminal will accept your phone.
If replacement changes the card details, check saved bookings and recurring payments with the provider. Mastercard's FAQ advises updating billers when account details change. Before leaving a hotel, I would settle how the next essential bill will be paid—not just whether a replacement card has been ordered.
5. Search for the wallet as a separate task
Contact the station, taxi operator, shop or accommodation where you may have left it, and use our LOST112 and found-property guide to search and confirm collection. A police loss report or a found-wallet listing does not notify your bank or unblock a card.
To ask a hotel or station for help: “해외에서 발급받은 카드를 잃어버렸습니다. 카드사에 분실신고를 해야 하는데, 전화할 수 있는 방법을 안내해 주실 수 있나요?” This asks for help reaching the issuer's loss-report service; it does not ask staff to handle your credentials.
Keep full card numbers, PINs, security codes and one-time codes out of public posts and messages to strangers. If you also lost your phone or identification, tell the relevant providers and ask the holding office what ownership checks it can accept.
No personal card report, emergency cash request, replacement delivery or reimbursement was tested. For Korean-issued cards, follow the issuer's current instructions; the earlier Korean card-loss checklist is separate.
