KTX Tickets in Korea: Book 2 Months Ahead, Find and Cancel Tickets
If you are planning to travel by KTX in Korea, Korail’s English ordinary-ticket guide now states that booking opens at 7:00 a.m. Korea Standard Time (KST), two months before departure. This matches the general booking-window change announced for October 1, 2026.
That does not mean a selectable date guarantees a train or a seat. When a search does not show what you expected, separate three questions: is the date available to select, is the intended train displayed, and is a seat actually available?
For an itinerary that also involves accommodation or onward travel, I would check the actual train and ticket before treating the journey as secured. A calendar date becoming available is only the first checkpoint.
Compare your options if KTX is sold out

Use the English ordinary-ticket route
Start from Korail’s official English booking site. Korail lists its website, KORAIL+, ticket machines and railway stations as ticket-purchase channels. Its ordinary-ticket guide states that website purchases are available until departure, ticket-machine sales until 10 minutes before departure, and railway-station sales until departure. Subway stations are not included.
Choose the ordinary-ticket route if you are buying a ticket for a particular journey. If you are using a KORAIL PASS, use its separate product and seat-reservation instructions. Do not transfer an ordinary-ticket rule to a pass reservation just because both appear on the same website.
“Two months” is not a promise of exactly 60 days
The current English ticket guide uses two months, not a fixed 60-day calculation. Check the date offered in the booking flow and any notice applying to the period you need. When planning from another country, compare against the date and time shown by Korail rather than assuming your device’s local calendar is the booking clock.
A general opening rule is also different from a particular train’s release or availability. Special sales or timetable notices, where relevant, need to be checked for the actual date, route, and service.
| What you see | Do not conclude immediately | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| The desired date cannot be selected. | Every train that day is sold out. | The current booking range and any notice for that period. |
| The date can be selected, but the intended train is absent. | The train no longer operates. | Departure and arrival stations, the search time, and relevant service notices. |
| The train is displayed, but no seat is available. | The booking date has not opened. | Other departure times and the options actually offered for that train. |
Check the journey in a small, repeatable order
- Enter the exact departure and arrival stations for the journey you intend to make.
- Check the departure date, search time, passenger details, and other conditions before searching.
- Read the returned train, date, departure time, class, and seat status—not just the calendar.
- If the expected service is missing, correct the search conditions first. Then compare any relevant official notice with that route and date.
- Before committing to the itinerary, verify the ticket produced by the completed purchase.
If a train is sold out, look at a different time or the alternatives the booking flow actually offers. Do not assume that a waiting-list option exists for your language, product, or train, or that a request for a seat is a confirmed ticket.

Keep the purchase details needed to retrieve the ticket
Korail’s English guide describes card payment and ticket retrieval using the purchase email and password. Keep those entries exactly as used, including case, so that you can check the purchase later through MY TICKET.
This is not a guarantee that every foreign-issued card will be accepted. Use the options actually offered for your booking and check the current payment notice or the issuer’s response if a payment fails. An error at payment is not, by itself, proof that the train is sold out or that all foreign visitors are excluded.
Before buying again, check whether the first attempt created a ticket or a charge. Keep card details, passwords, and booking credentials out of public questions and screenshots.
Before changing plans, read the current ticket conditions
Use the current ticket guide and the terms shown with your purchase for cancellation or changes. Do not use a general booking-opening time as a refund deadline. Nor should an older guide’s cutoff for another sales channel become the rule for your own ticket.
Before departure, open MY TICKET on Korail’s English website using the email address and password from your purchase to request a refund. After departure, any eligible refund must be requested at a railway-station ticket counter before the arrival time printed on your ticket; refunds are unavailable after that time.
Cancellation penalties vary by timing, with different rates for Friday–Sunday, public holidays and traditional holiday periods. Check the applicable fee before confirming a cancellation.
