Korea EITC for Foreign Residents: Check the Nationality Rule First
This guide is about Korea’s 근로장려금 (Earned Income Tax Credit), not the US EITC or an ordinary income-tax refund. Start with the nationality rule before opening a form or budgeting for a payment.
1. Foreign nationality is normally an exclusion—with specific exceptions
For 2025 income, the NTS excludes applicants without Korean nationality as of December 31, 2025, but lists exceptions for a person married to a Korean national or with a qualifying Korean-national dependent child. All other requirements still apply. A visa or Korean bank account alone does not establish eligibility.

Check the relationship and relevant dates with the tax office if your household changed. A marriage or child-related exception is not a decision that the household meets every income, asset or residence condition.
2. Keep the income year and application year separate
For 2025 annual income, the NTS timetable gives May 1–June 1, 2026 as the regular application period and June 2–December 1, 2026 as the late-application period. These dates should not be confused with the semiannual route for income earned in 2026.
Before starting, write down the income year, whether an application for it already exists, and the application type. If you already applied, check that application’s status rather than creating another because a different article mentions a later date. These dates are specific to this round, not a permanent annual calendar.
3. Compare household income and assets—not just one salary
The NTS lists these combined annual-income thresholds for 2025:
| NTS household category | Annual total income must be below |
|---|---|
| 단독가구 — NTS single-household category; not necessarily someone living alone | KRW 22 million |
| 홑벌이가구 — single-earner category | KRW 32 million |
| 맞벌이가구 — dual-earner category | KRW 44 million |
Use the NTS’s detailed household definitions, not marital status alone. Household assets on June 1, 2025 must total less than KRW 240 million; debts are not deducted. Assets from KRW 170 million to below KRW 240 million trigger the 50% payment rule.
Eligible income may come from employment, qualifying business activities or religious work. Other exclusions include being another resident’s dependent child in 2025 or an excluded professional business run by the applicant or spouse. The NTS also excludes a person who was continuously employed as a regular employee on December 31, 2025 with average monthly employment income of KRW 5 million or more, including where this applies to the spouse. Check the complete eligibility table; one figure below a threshold is not approval.
4. Prepare the correct application—not someone else’s login
The public NTS instructions distinguish applicants with an invitation from those applying without one. They also describe the Hometax direct-entry route. An invitation is not a final award; lacking one is not, by itself, a rejection.
- Match the income year and household information before entering a new application.
- Check the current identity method and any additional evidence requested for your circumstances.
- Keep the submission result, then use 심사진행상황 조회 (review progress) for the existing application.
I checked public guidance, not a foreign resident’s authenticated application. Do not assume that a particular identity method or refund account will work merely because the information page opens. If you cannot complete identification, ask the NTS or the responsible tax office which official route and documents apply; do not substitute another person’s credentials.
The NTS foreign-taxpayer English help page lists 1588-0560, weekdays 09:00–18:00 except 11:30–13:00. Ask which office or service handles your EITC question. No individual tax, identity or account details belong in a public comment.
5. Submission, assessment and payment are different results
The NTS review and payment page lists a 5% reduction for late applications. Actual payment also depends on eligibility review, other applicable reductions and offsets. The stated payment deadline is within four months of application, not a guaranteed personal payment date.
Keep the application receipt, assessment and actual bank receipt separate. An estimate is not available household cash. This guide does not determine anyone’s entitlement or submit a claim.

Official public conditions checked October 21, 2026. Scope: the 2026 annual/late application for 2025 income. Recheck the NTS guidance for a later income year.
