Korea's 25% Phone-Plan Discount: Check Before You Renew
If you live in Korea and plan to keep your phone, ask about 선택약정 before renewing the contract. The 25% discount applies to eligible mobile-plan charges, not necessarily the entire bill. It is an alternative to an eligible carrier handset subsidy, not an additional discount stacked on top of that subsidy.
The useful comparison is not “which shop advertises the biggest percentage?” It is the total cost for the months you actually expect to stay: plan charges, phone payments, other services and any early-cancellation charge. This guide checks public information; it does not describe a completed foreign-subscriber application.
First check which kind of service you have
| Your situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| An eligible SKT, KT or LG U+ line | Whether the phone, current plan and existing subsidy or contract allow this discount. A device check alone is not a completed application. |
| A budget carrier, or MVNO (알뜰폰) | Compare that provider’s actual plan and promotion. Do not assume the major carriers’ 25% scheme applies. |
| A short-stay travel SIM or data eSIM | Use the purchased package’s terms. A 12- or 24-month discount commitment is a different product. |
A phone bought unlocked, second-hand or abroad is not automatically excluded, but buying the phone yourself does not enrol the line in a discount. SmartChoice’s public explanation separates eligible situations from the application process.
Separate the plan charge from the total bill
Here is a calculation example, not a current tariff quote. If the confirmed eligible monthly amount is ₩44,000, 25% is ₩11,000, leaving ₩33,000 for that part of the bill. A phone instalment, insurance, paid add-on or extra usage can still sit outside it. Ask the carrier which amount the discount uses and how other discounts interact.
Compare two written quotes for the same period: keeping your current phone with the 25% plan discount, and buying a new phone with a carrier subsidy. Include plan charges, handset costs and any early-cancellation charges. A cheaper handset price and a cheaper monthly plan are not interchangeable savings.
Foreign-subscriber approval is a separate check
KT’s English What You’ll Need page lists foreign-subscriber identification, payment and remaining-stay requirements. It currently says at least 90 days must remain on the visa to subscribe to KT mobile service. That is a provider-specific subscription condition, not proof that a 12-month discount or a phone-instalment application will be accepted.

Have the carrier check your own line, document type, remaining stay and payment method before choosing a term. Ask separately about handset financing. Neither a visa category nor a successful device lookup is a universal approval rule across all carriers.
Choose a term that fits your stay
SmartChoice describes one- and two-year commitments. Before choosing either, ask for the start date, end date and the actual charge if you cancel or switch on your expected departure date. Do not estimate a cancellation charge simply by multiplying months left by the monthly discount.
A 12-month exchange or work placement is a reason to compare shorter commitments, prepaid service and MVNO options—not a reason to assume a 24-month offer is cheaper. Keep phone-instalment debt and discount repayment separate in the comparison.
After cancellation: check the final settlement separately
An early-cancellation charge and an unclaimed overpayment are different amounts. SmartChoice’s official refund guide describes money left after cancellation or number-porting settlement, including overpaid charges or certain deposits. It does not promise every former customer a refund.
The same guide says foreign subscribers cannot use SmartChoice’s online unclaimed-refund enquiry and should contact the former carrier directly. This is an online-service restriction, not a finding that you have no money due. Ask that carrier to distinguish the final bill, any discount repayment and any refundable balance, and explain its accepted identity and refund procedure. Do not disable identity-protection services simply to force an online lookup.
Watch for the “extra 25%” message
A 15 September 2026 official warning addressed messages promising an additional 25% phone-bill discount. The warning distinguishes the existing 25% contract-based plan discount from misleading claims that an additional 25% discount is available. Use your carrier’s official app, website or store, rather than a contact number supplied in a forwarded message.
Leave with the answer to these questions
- Is my current phone and line eligible, and is a previous subsidy commitment still active?
- What exact monthly amount receives the discount?
- What are the new dates and the charge if I leave or switch early?
- Which identification and payment documents does this provider require from me?
- After applying, where will the effective date and discount appear?
Then check the application result and the next bill. An eligibility message, a submitted request and an applied discount are three different results. Do not post an IMEI, residence-card number or bill containing personal details in a public comment.
